A Pappillion like true story of a lady who spends eight long years in war-torn Afghanistan and experiences the deprivations firsthand. A bold account of what happened to her and other women and children in those years. Those were the times when Taliban had started altering the social norms of the entire nation. Her unsuccessful attempt to flee the country via Pakistan, travelling alone for five days, in a country where women were prohibited from travelling alone and the description of the social status of women makes an interesting reading. It can only be attributed to her infallible courage and belief in her self that she could make it.
The introduction to the book sums it all. Some excerpts from the introduction:
About the fundamentalist regime
(..but in the name of religion they commit ghastly acts and have created a reign of harrassment, where men are divided and the independence of women taken away...)

The core theme of this book
(My Jihad is not against religion but against religious fundamentalism)
....এই সংকীর্ণতা অপব্যাখ্যা ও অবক্ষয়ের প্রতিই আমি সবার দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করতে চেয়েছি |আরও দৃষ্টি নিবদ্ধ করাতে চেয়েছি তাদের প্রতি, যারা আমাদের এই ভারত থেকে আফগানিস্তান গিয়ে অসহ্য জীবনযাপন করছে |(I would again like to draw attention towards this narrow mindedness, misinterpretation and depletion and also draw attention towards those who like me went from India to Afghanistan and are leading this kind of helpless existence.).
The immense effort she put in to escape
I would not have been able to return but for the extreme courage, fortitude and patience ...)
The trials and tribulations faced by the weaker sections of society:
(Slander towards women, neglect of children, disobeying elders – no one will know it as I after such contact with the people of that country)
The incredulous treatment meted out to her at the Indian Embassy at Islamabad:
আমি দীর্ঘ আট বছর বন্দিদশা কাটিয়ে তারপর পালিয়ে তালিবানদের সমস্ত শাসনকে পদদলিত করে পাকিস্তানে ঢুকে পড়েছিলাম এবং সেখানে ভারতে আয়ামবাসীর লোক কীভাবে একজন ভারতবাসীকে সাহায্যের হাত বাড়িয়ে না দিয়ে লাঞ্চিত করতে চেয়েছিল, সমস্ত কাহিনী লিপিবদ্ধ করার চেষ্টা করেছি | (I managed to escape to escape to Pakistan after eight years of incarceration defeating the Taliban regime, and there at the Indian Embassy the treatment meted out to an fellow Indian by refusing assistance and attempting to take advantage, I have tried to pen down my story)

She ends the introduction with:
আমার এই বই পড়ে যদি অন্তত একজনও সাহ্রাদয পাঠক প্রতিবাদে গর্জন করে উঠেন, তা হলেই আমার শ্রম সার্থক হবে |( My endeavour would be successful if by reading this book even one empathetic reader voices his protest)

While going through the various items which appeared online regarding Sushmita Banerjee, some information is different from what is written.
That Janbaz Khan (her husband) already had a wife named Gulguti. The first reference to Gulguti comes when Janbaz Khan does not return after a considerable period of time. And then there is news that he would not be coming soon. This is almost three years after Sushmita has been in Afghanistan. In fact the chapter has a paragraph which starts with the following:
(It has been three years in Afghanistan. Janbaz has gone to India with Asam Chacha)
The same chapter has
(leaving apart Gulgutti, Gulgutti is like my cousin. Gulgutti's both eyes are red as if she has wept a lot)
(Gulgutti's husband went to another country and there he got married again. She has no other place to go. Gulgutti's husband is in Kuwait)

That she shot the Taliban who wanted her dead:
The reference is to the episode of confronting the Taliban at Ghazani where she took shelter before moving on to Kabul on her journey to India. She overhears her male in-laws and three to four Taliban discussing her future.
দু’চারজন তালিবানও এসছে | এদের মধ্যে একজনকেই আমে বিশ্বাস করতে পারি | তিনি হলেন দ্রানাইচাচা | আমার পালাবার ব্যাপারটা সবটা না হলেও কিছুটা তিনি জানেনে |(They are trying to figure out what to do with me. Should I be shot dead? Or send back to India? A few of them are also Taliban. Among all of them I can only believe in one person. And that is  Dranai Chacha. He is not completely aware of the entire background of my flight but knows a few details)
And when the Taliban state that she has to be killed because of her moral character she loses her restraint:
(... the Taliban say that they will kill me, a woman of lose moral character. Hearing their conversation my blood started boiling. An individual with such heinous and violent psychology had the audacity to cast aspersions on my moral character? And I ? A daughter of the land of Sarojini Naidu, Rani Lakshmibai, Devi Choudharani, Indira Gandhi, how could I tolerate such comments from a depraved person having a perverted mentality ? ....)
She then takes a Kalashnikov hanging nearby and confronts the Taliban threatening to kill them all. She is very open regarding her escapes and the reasons therefor. However when the Taliban says that she should be whipped she let’s go full blast:
(... 'You!. Do you think I am your father's property? That you will whip me ? Come! Come near me. Who wants to whip me ? By learning a couple of urdu words from Pakistan what do you think of yourselves? Go home and look at your mothers and sisters and then whip me ? Where were you for so many days ? ... )
